Folk Music Festivals in North Carolina

It’s no surprise to learn that the number of folk music festivals in North Carolina is staggering. We decided to go with what we have and return to update this post with more events later, so you don’t miss any of the largest spring festivals. You can join the fun at the Fiddler’s Grove Festival from May 25-27 in Union Grove, North Carolina. Follow the festival on Facebook and on twitter @fiddlersgrovenc.

The 29th annual Folkmoot Festival is held from July 18-29, 2012 in Waynesville, NC. Waynesville is located just outside of Asheville.

Support the Third Annual Folk Music Festival at St. Andrews University in Raleigh on April 21. The festival runs from noon until five on the DeTamble Terrace. Performers include Lisa Null, David Via, and Larry Keel. Amateur musicians from St. Andrews University will also perform, including student Spencer Phillips.

The Folk School Festival is held on October 6th and 7th at the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown.

The annual Franklin Folk Festival runs from July 20-21 in Franklin, NC.

Visit Aberdeen for the Historical Crafts & Farm Skills Festival September 28-30, 2012.

The Hopscotch Music Festival will be held September 6-8 in Raleigh.

The 34th annual International Folk Festival runs from September 29-30 in Fayetteville, NC.

The Bascom Lamar Lunsford Music Festival will be held on October 6th from 10-10pm at Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC.

Merlefest runs from April 26-29, 2012 in Wilkesboro. Follow the festival on Facebook and on twitter @MerleFest. 2012 performers include Bela Fleck & The Flecktones (original line-up), Doc Watson, Vince Gill, and Tedeschi Trucks Band.

The 85th annual Mountain Dance and Folk Festival runs from August 2-4 in Asheville, North Carolina. Follow the festival on Facebook and on twitter @Shindigonthegr.

Join other fans of traditional Appalachian music at Mountain Heritage Day on September 29, 2012 at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, NC.

The 26th annual Music in the Mountains Folk Music Festival takes place indoors at the Burnsville Town Center on September 29, 2012. According to an organizer, they changed the date from October to September to avoiding competing with the Bascom Lunsford Festival in Mars Hill.

The North Carolina Folk Arts Festival happens on May 12th in Saint Pauls.

The Okrafolk Festival will be held on June 1-3, 2012 on Okracoke Island, North Carolina.

Visit the Piedmont Folklife Festival on October 20, 2012 at Crossing Paths Park in Indian Trail.

Stop by the Charlie Poole Music Festival on June 8th and 9th at the Governor Morehead Park in Eden, NC.

The free Carl Sandburg Folk Music Festival will be held May 28 from 11-4pm at the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site in Flat Rock, NC. Flat Rock is three miles south of Hendersonville.

The 42nd Annual Smoky Mountain Folk Festival will be held Labor Day Weekend at Lake Junaluska Conference & Retreat Center in Lake Junaluska, NC. Follow the festival on Facebook.

The 3rd annual Surry Old Time Fiddlers Convention will be held March 30-31, 2012 at Surry Community College in Dobson, NC.
